The glory of Ancient Athens began with the Iliad and the Mycenaean efforts to Take Troy. We start in Athens and learn about the height of this original democracies golden age including an excursion to Marathon and other sites. We then delve back 700 years to Mycenae and the great stone walls of this city which organized the launching of 1000 ships and the invasion of Troy. Along the way, we will visit Argos, and Tiryns which was first established around 6,000 BC, before the Pyramids, Stonehenge or any other great site. A night at nearby Nafplion which dips into the Venetian Empire and the Ottoman Turks will enrich this great travel experience.
This travel experience starts in Athens and explores the sights, museums, events and highlights of Ancient Athens, the center of the Greek world. We will then continue to Delphi the home of the Greek Gods, located high in the mountains with a stunning view of the receding valley. The next destination is Olympia, the ancient site of the well know Olympic games. Enroute back to Athens we will visit several other important sites and locations and become enveloped in the ancient world which was Greece.
Discover the most famous monuments and attractions of Athens and see the magnificent New Acropolis Museum! See the highlights of Athens in one day with this walking tour. A licensed guide will give you detailed information about all the sights you pass by and the exhibits you will see in the Acropolis Museum. We will then see the House of the Greek Parliament and the changing of the guards in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. The tour continues to the National Gardens and the impressive Neoclassical Zappeion Hall. Opposite Zappeion, there is the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the famous Arch of Hadrian. We cross the road in front of the Arch and we are found in the picturesque district of Plaka. At the entrance of this district, you will see the statue of Melina Merkouri.
Drive through the fertile land of Beotia, crossing the towns of Thebes (kingdom of the legendary Oedipus), Levadia and Arachova (short stop on the way back). Arrive at Delphi, the most famous oracle of the ancient world and navel of the Earth. Built amphitheatrically along the slopes of Mount Parnassus and surrounded by gorgeous nature, this archaeological site is among the most impressive places in Greece. Visit the Temple of Apollo, the Treasury of the Athenians, the Ancient Theatre, the Stadium, the Gymnasium, the Temple of Athena Pronea. Do not miss the Archaeological Museum with masterpieces of Ancient Greek sculpture, such as the bronze Charioteer and the Sphinx. Lunch in the modern village of Delphi and return to Athens by the same route.
Drive the coastal road along the Saronic Gulf to the Corinth Canal, which connects the Aegean with the Ionian Sea (short stop). Visit to Mycenae, the Homeric city of Atreides, where you see the Lion Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, the Royal Tombs, the Archaeological Museum. Lunch in Mycenae. Then depart for Nafplion, a picturesque town with Venetian architecture and the wonderful fortress of Palamidi on top of a hill above (short photo stop). Continue for Epidaurus to visit the marvelous Ancient Theatre (4th century B.C.), famous for the perfect design and acoustics. Return to Athens following the National Road from Epidaurus to Corinth.
